OpenAI accelerates AI agent phone to early 2027 production with MediaTek chip, says supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

OpenAI is fast-tracking development of its first “AI agent phone,” with mass production now targeted for the first half of 2027 instead of 2028, according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Reasons for the revised timeline include OpenAI's planned IPO and intensifying competition in AI agent phones. The device will reportedly use a customized version of MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 chip, with Luxshare Precision Industry as the exclusive manufacturer, and is expected to feature two AI processors for handling vision and language simultaneously plus an enhanced image signal processor for real-world sensing. Kuo estimates combined 2027-2028 shipments could reach around 30M units if development stays on track.
