Meta will shut down its Horizon Worlds metaverse for virtual reality users on June 15, ending the ability to build, publish, or access virtual worlds on Meta Quest headsets as the company shifts to a mobile-only experience. The move marks a significant retreat from CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 2020-era metaverse push, with Meta's Reality Labs division accumulating nearly $80B in losses since 2020, including a record $6B loss in Q4 2025. Meta also cut 1,000 Reality Labs jobs in January and shuttered some VR game studios, while competitors like Roblox and Fortnite, which attract 144 million and 1.3 million daily active users respectively, continue to operate across PC, console, and mobile platforms.
