Judge Rules AI Training on Copyrighted Books Can Qualify as Fair Use

A federal judge ruled that AI model training using copyrighted books can be considered fair use, siding with Anthropic in a case brought by three authors. However, the judge separated the issue of downloading pirated books, which could still lead to liability, from the training itself, which he deemed “exceedingly transformative.” The decision could set an early precedent in a growing number of copyright lawsuits involving generative AI.
