Google’s Workspace icon redesign sparks meme wave as users pitch Doc Martens for Docs, bed sheets for Sheets, and leather jackets

Google's revamped Workspace app icons set off a wave of memes on X, with users pitching everyday objects as alternative designs: Doc Martens for Docs, bed sheets for Sheets, sandals for Slides, and a leather racing jacket for Drive. The company said Tuesday the new visuals are meant to drive consistency and cohesion across Workspace apps including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and others, with the rollout happening over the coming weeks. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai joined in, responding with two thinking emojis to a post from X user Trung Phan captioned “Google is sitting on a massive clothing and home textiles opportunity,” which sparked more iterations of a hypothetical Google clothing line. The reaction stands in contrast to Cracker Barrel's logo redesign last year, which bombed with customers in a far less playful way.
