Google is laying off staff across its Cloud division, with the cuts landing over the past two weeks. Among the hardest hit is the Threat Intelligence Group, one of Google's top security units and the team that regularly publishes research tracking hackers, which saw cuts this week, with some affected employees posting about it on LinkedIn. The layoffs also reached employees at Mandiant, the cybersecurity firm Google bought in 2022, along with other roles inside Google Cloud. The exact number of people affected and the reason for the timing aren't clear, though in at least one case Google cited the need to reinvest in growth areas such as AI, and a spokesperson said the company regularly reviews its structure to keep pace with customer and industry demands. Google quietly cut some Cloud staff last year as well, mostly in user-experience roles.
