Google adds preferred source labels and new carousels to AI Mode and AI Overviews, expands highly cited label across search

Google is officially rolling out preferred source labels inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, letting users spot links in AI responses from sources they've already selected, with the labels styled to stand out similar to Top Stories. The feature is global across all languages, and Google said users are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source, with more than 345,000 unique sources already selected. The company is also adding new carousels in AI results: one highlighting timely articles on developing topics, and another surfacing insights from online discussions, forums, and social media. Google updated its developer documentation to include AI Mode and walk site owners through adding a button to mark their site as preferred. Separately, the highly cited label that launched in Top Stories in 2022 is expanding to more article links across the broader search results page.
