European shoppers are getting hit with duty charges they never saw coming, and BEUC, which covers consumer groups in 31 countries, wants the Commission to stop it. BEUC found the EU's new €3 parcel duty surfacing late in checkout or not at all, and carriers including PostNL and La Poste ask recipients to pay before handing the package over, sometimes with an administration fee on top. Dirk Gotink, the Dutch MEP who steered the customs file through Parliament, wrote to Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on July 7 arguing platforms should carry the payment, not people answering their doors, per Reuters. A Commission spokesperson said the law puts customs on businesses, not consumers. Temu and AliExpress both show the duty at checkout, AliExpress as an estimate, while Shein doesn't and says its prices already account for it.
