The U.S. Justice Department charged three Super Micro Computer employees, including co-founder and board member Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, with illegally shipping at least $2.5B worth of advanced AI servers to China in violation of U.S. export controls. Prosecutors say the defendants installed thousands of hollow, non-functioning server replicas at warehouses to deceive compliance teams while actual chips were already en route to China, and used dryers to remove identifying labels from machines. Supermicro said the alleged conduct contradicts company policy and that it has been fully cooperating with the government's investigation.
