Bossware Startups Are Spreading Algorithmic Surveillance Across the Global South

A new report from Coworker.org reveals that “Little Tech” startups (unregulated, VC-funded firms) are rapidly deploying AI-powered workplace surveillance tools across developing nations. These technologies, including biometric timekeeping, productivity dashboards, and predictive HR analytics, are increasingly used to monitor gig workers and office staff alike in countries like Kenya, Brazil, and India. Workers say the systems erode autonomy and create stress. With weak enforcement of data laws and platforms like Uber and Rappii managing workers via apps instead of people, algorithmic management is becoming the norm in lower-regulated markets.
