A new Adyen survey found 58% of Canadians visit physical stores to spend time, browse, or relax even when they don't plan to buy anything, while 66% say they're more selective with spending than last year. Gen Z leads adoption of stores as “third spaces” at 69%, followed by Millennials at 61%, Gen X at 57%, and Boomers at 51%. Bookstores top the list as the favorite hangout (55%), followed by malls (44%) and thrift stores (36%). The data shows window shopping still converts: 91% of Canadians make emotion-led purchases, with 35% doing so weekly, and 87% citing “treating themselves.” Comfort drives 38% of emotional purchases and stress relief drives 25%. Gen Z reduced discretionary spending less than any other generation (60% vs. 67% for Millennials and 71% for Gen X). Adyen's Canada Country Manager said retailers should match relaxed in-store environments with fast, flexible checkout including digital wallets and BNPL.
