A24 is defending its AI research partnership with Google DeepMind after backlash from cinephiles, with a spokesperson telling Wired the studio would rather help shape the tools than watch them get built without filmmaker input. Spokesperson Sophia Shin said A24 isn't enamored with the generative AI results currently showing up in Hollywood films and framed DeepMind's $75M investment as a research deal focused on behind-the-scenes workflow problems rather than AI-made content. Shin stressed there are no plans to turn A24's existing IP into GenAI tools, a pointed contrast with the collapsed $1B Disney-OpenAI Sora deal. A24 says it and its filmmakers keep full creative control while helping shape what DeepMind builds.
